Clinics & Services
Maternity Services
Our main antenatal clinic is on a Friday morning between 8:30am and 11.30am. It is run by our community midwife, but if you need to see a doctor just let us know and we'll arrange it.
All the doctors will see antenatal patients in ordinary surgeries if this is more convenient for you.
In the later part of your pregnancy it is worth coming on a Friday to get to know the community midwife. Post-natal examinations can be done by any of the doctors in their normal surgeries but please let us know when you make the appointment that you are coming for a post-natal check.
Asthma and Chest clinic
Sister Haigh has a special interest in respiratory medicine and runs our asthma and COPD clinics.
There are no specific times for the clinics so it will be easier for you to make an appointment to see her on either a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. She works closely with all the doctors and Dr Kelman has a particular interest in respiratory medicine.
If you have asthma, emphysema or COPD (chronic pulmonary airways obstruction) we like to see you at the surgery at regular intervals to monitor your treatment and progress. Sister Haigh may carry out a spirometry test which is a breathing test that gives us quite a bit of infomration about your lungs. We will contact you when your appointment is due. Please bring any inhalers with you so we can check they are still the best ones for you to use.
If you have lung disease and feel you are deteriorating please ring the surgery and you will be seen quickly.
Baby Clinic
We have a team of health visitors, (available on: 0161 928 4653) .
They perform most of the routine checks on your baby. Dr. Kelman carries out the 8 week baby check and works closely with the health visitors.
They are available for advice on a wide variety of issues concerning babies and children, including feeding issues, monitoring growth etc.
Health Visitors are not just there to support your baby but the whole family. Health visitors can:
- Support women with post natal depression
- Advise on employment and benefit rights
- Give information on local support networks including ante-natal classes, leisure activities, mother and toddler groups etc.
- Advise on options for child care available locally.
- Provide support for single parents
- Address conflicts within the family, including domestic violence

Contraception
All our clinical staff are qualified in family planning. You will need to see the doctor or nurse practitioner if you are just starting or changing your method of contraception. If you require a repeat prescription please see the nurse and she can arrange a repeat.
Dr. Naylor fits coils for our patients. If you are interested in this method of contraception, please book in to see her. The Government have decided that from April 2009 all women must receive information on long acting hormonal contraception. You may be given a leaflet on this when you attend for your contraceptive review.

Diabetes
Dr. Cranston and Sister Brayzier run our diabetic clinic every fortnight on Tuesday between 9.00am and 11:30am.
All patients with diabetes can be seen. Please contact reception on 0161980 3835 for an appointment. We have a dietician who attends our clinic to provide essential dietary advice. If you just need to see the dietician that is fine, just let us know.
We operate a computerised recall system so it is likely we will be in touch at some point in the year to ask you to arrange your diabetes appointment. You will sometimes be sent a blood form to have a test before attending.
Both clinicians keep themselves regularly updated and successfully completed the certificate in diabetes care from Warwick University in 2006. Our latest annual update was undertaken at Manchester University in March 2011
Dr. Cranston entered his project course work into a national competition and was one of three finalists in the diabetes guidelines section. The project was a computer algorithm to help diagnose diabetes and is now incorporated into our clinical computer system.
District Nurse Service
Our district nurses visit our housebound patients in the community. They are contactable on 0161 980 8231.
If they are out of the office please leave a message. They will do dressings, give injections, change catheters, etc. They have an office upstairs in our building and do a clinic at the surgery for mobile patients on Tuesdays and Fridays between 1:00 and 2:00 pm.
Appointments for the district nurse surgery - please call 0161 980 8231.
Hypertension and CKD
Hypertension is monitored largely by our Practice Nurse, Sister Sinar and Health Care Assistant Jenny de Garis.
They work closely with your doctor so we can adjust your treatment to suit. We have hypertension appointments throughout the day for your convenience.
CKD or "Chronic Kidney Disease"
What is it?
A kidney blood test, can tell us if your kidney function is lower than expected.
Abnormal kidney function is divided into 5 stages. Stages1 and 2 require no treatment. Stages 3, 4 and 5 need monitoring, and possibly treatment. Stage 5 is the worst and you would need to be under a specialist.
This system of grading kidney function is a result of the government being lobbied by kidney specialists to attempt to reduce the amount of serious kidney disease seen in hospitals.
Unfortunately, a large proportion of the population have ended up labelled with CKD Stage 3 disease, but the vast majority will never need any treatment at all!
Critics of the staging system point out that most women over the age of 74 and men over the age of 82 will have CKD 3 anyway, as our kidneys get worse with age. This can be NORMAL.
However if you are found to have CKD 3,4 or 5, research has shown it is very important to have a normal blood pressure as this helps prevent any worsening of the condition.
Certain drugs called ACE inhibitors actually can protect the kidney whilst controlling blood pressure. You may be called in for some further blood tests and blood pressure monitoring.
Minor Surgery
Dr. Cranston performs minor surgery at the practice. Operations are performed under local anaesthetic. These include removal of cysts and other skin lumps, biopsies, treatment of ingrowing toenails etc. We have liquid nitrogen treatment and a hyfrecator unit available. These are both used to treat minor skin growths.
Specimens are sent for laboratory analysis where appropriate.
Joint injections are performed for certain shoulder, elbow, wrist and hip problems. These can sometimes be arranged outside the normal minor surgery clinic times. Please make an appointment with your GP to discuss your condition. If an injection may help, this will be organised at a time suitable to you.
