Your doctor may telephone you first to find out exactly what you are experiencing.
The doctor may ask a few questions. This is quite normal, and part of a process called "triage", which helps us to prioritise care according to the individual need. Some people may feel a little uncomfortable, being asked questions whilst they are ill, but it is important to help if you can.
After the call, the doctor should tell you what will happen next.
It may be that some advice over the telephone is the most appropriate course of action.
Sometimes, if your condition warrants it, we may even advise you to go to hospital. We can arrange all of this for you if necessary.
If you are not too ill to make it to the surgery we would ask you to try. In the time it takes for a doctor to do a home visit, up to 4 patients could be seen in surgery. In addition, better facilities are available at surgery.
We completely understand it is not possible to predict when you are going to be ill. But if at all possible, if you think you need a home visit, ring us before 11am. This helps us to organise which doctor will be allocated to deal with your problem. If a particular doctor has been involved with your ongoing care, it is often best if they continue see you. After mid-day however, the duty doctor for that day will be allocated to you.
