The was set up by the government in 2004. A series of targets was set in areas such as diabetes, asthma, practice management and patient experience. Points were allocated to each section and incentive payments made depending on achievement.
Oddly, the government seem unhappy about the high level of achievement that General Practice as a profession has delivered. This has resulted in a good deal of relentlessly negative spin in the newspapers. Each year they have made the targets tougher and reduced the financial incentives available. Even so, most practices have continued to deliver extremely high quality care.
I am pleased to say our practice has achieved outstanding quality in all areas. Results for 2007 are not yet published on the website but should appear shortly. We have however achieved as well as in all previous years.
No doubt higher targets still will be set and the financial incentives cut year on year but I am confident we can deliver whatever this government throws at us.
