Swine Flu Section

1. Swine Flu Clinics

We will continue to run swine flu vaccination clinics through the coming year. The advice of the government medical officer is that the flu virus most likely to be circulating most in the winter is the current swine flu virus.

2. Entitlement to Vaccination

We will be vaccinating patients who the government deem to be most at risk. The clinical risk groups, in order of priority are :

1. Adults and children over six months of age who have a long-term health condition, including
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Chronic heart disease
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Chronic neurological diseases
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Immunosuppression caused by a disease or treatment for a disease. For example, this may include people who do not have a spleen, and people who are on immunosuppressant treatment or are taking high doses of systemic steroids. Clinics are by appointment only.

2. Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy
  • Being pregnant can put you more at risk of being seriously ill if you catch swine flu. So far, evidence suggests that pregnant women are four times more likely to develop serious complications from swine flu and up to five times more likely to need to go to hospital. The risks of flu are highest at the later stages of pregnancy.
3. People who live in the same house as someone whose immune system is compromised by disease or treatment
  • If you live with someone who is having treatment for cancer, for example, and you catch swine flu, they might catch it from you and become very ill.
Children Under 5
Will we be vaccinating this group?
The government have advised that routine vaccination of children aged 6 months to 5 years will cease from March 2010.
Children in this age group who have a chronic disease will still be eligible for vaccination.
If your child has a chronic disease and you would like the vaccination, please call reception on 0161 980 3835 to make an appointment or send a
