We have had a lot of enquiries about CKD or "Chronic Kidney Disease". This new diagnosis is a result of the government being lobbied by kidney specialists to attempt to reduce the amount of serious kidney disease seen in hospitals. The theory is that if a mathematical formula is applied to all kidney test results done in England and Wales, then this will identify patients most at risk.
Unfortunately, this hasn't been done anywhere else in the world. What we have ended up with are millions of people labelled as having CKD. Critics of the new system point out that almost by definition most women over the age of 74 and men over the age of 82 will have CKD anyway, as our kidneys get worse with age. This is NORMAL.
There are different levels of CKD. Stages 1 and 2 do not require specific treatment. The most commonly found is CKD 3. Stages 4 and 5 are more serious. If you are found to have CKD 3,4 or 5, research has shown it is very important to have a normal blood pressure as this helps prevent any worsening of the condition.
Certain drugs called ACE inhibitors actually can protect the kidney whilst controlling blood pressure. You may be called in for some further blood tests and blood pressure monitoring. find out more
More information on CKD is available from the national kidney federation, or you can use the search facility in the title bar above.
