Anti-histamines
Useful for your first aid kit. They can be used to treat insect bites, allergies, skin irritations etc . They come in tablet, syrup and creams/lotions.
Several types are available over the counter, for example Chlorpheniramine (Piriton) is an oral preparation. Eurax is a cream or lotion, Anthisan is a cream - for insect bites - Please speak to your pharmacist for advice regarding other brands. Some of the latest oral non-sedating anti-histamines are available on prescription only. Please speak to us if you want more information
Piriton - Directions for use:
- Available over the counter in tablet (4mg) or syrup ( 2mg/5ml) form.
- Can be taken by children over the age of one year.
- Adult dose: 4mg, 3 or 4 times a day
- Childs dose:
Age 1 - 2 yrs - 1mg twice a day ( half a 5ml spoonful) Age 2 - 5 yrs - 1mg every 4 to 6 hours. Max = 6mg daily
Age 6 - 12 yrs - 2mg every 4 to 6 hours
Common side-effects
- May cause sedation: careful if driving etc
- Use with caution in liver, kidney, prostatic hypertrophy and glaucoma.
