Anti-malaria drugs

Proguanil plus Atovaquone
(brand name Malarone®)
( £38 for 12 pills. Extra tablets are £2.25 each)

Malarone is now licensed in the U.K. for prevention of malaria. It was previously licensed as a treatment for malaria. Malarone is a combination of proguanil hydrochloride 100 mg and atovaquone 250 mg.
It has been widely used elsewhere throughout the world however and is extremely effective although somewhat more expensive than older treatments.

Malarone is now one of three options (the others are mefloquine or doxycycline) for prevention of malaria when travelling to areas with chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum malaria.

Directions for use:

  • The adult dosage is one adult tablet daily starting 1 to 2 days before travel, taken daily during travel, and continuing daily for 7 days after leaving the malarious area.
  • The daily dose should be taken at the same time each day with food or milk.
  • Malarone can probably be used for up to 3 months. Specialist advice should be sought for long-term prophylaxis

Side Effects

The most common adverse effects reported are abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and headache.

Who should not take this combination?

  • Malarone may not be suitable for use in moderate to severe renal impairment
  • Pregnancy and Breast-Feeding.
    Malarone is not currently recommended for pregnant women.
  • Caution is also advised in breast feeding.
