Occasionally, virulent strains develop and cause illness It is spread by droplets from the nose of an infected person. It can occur sporadically throughout the world but sub-saharan Africa is of particular risk. Recently an outbreak of a different strain occurred at the Haj in Saudi Arabia. Because outbreaks can occur quickly, it is best to contact us for advice if you are worried about an outbreak at your destination. The World Health Organisation Outbreaks website is worth checking. It gives up to date information on disease outbreaks worldwide.

Meningitis Vaccine
- Doses Required: 1
- Given into muscle or subcutaneously.
- Different types depending on the particular outbreak.
- Usually Meningitis A & C. Recently for the Hajj ACWY used.
- Can be given to children from 2 months
(certain brands only)
- Children under 5yrs may need a booster after 2 to 3 years
- Adult booster need 3-5 years (depending on brand)
Who should be vaccinated
...NOT EVERYBODY!
Those going to risk areas who will be in close contact with the local population or staying for long periods. The risk is usually low if you are on a two week package holiday, unless there is some reason you will be in particularly close contact.
