Tetanus Price: FREE for NHS patients
About the diseaseTetanus is caused by toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. It is found in the intestines of many animals including man.
The bacteria can form spores, which are found scattered throughout the environment. They can enter through dirty cuts in skin and trigger the disease.
Symptoms
The incubation period is between 3-21 days during which time the muscles become increasingly rigid. Lockjaw can occur whre it is impossible to open the mouth fully. Painful spasms can occur.
Fortunately tetanus is now rare in this country thanks to the childhood immunisation program, and receiving boosters after cuts etc.
Tetanus Vaccine
- Dose: 0.5ml into muscle
- Children receive 3 doses starting at 2 months of age.
- They receive a pre-school booster at age 5 and then further boosters after 10 years

- Immunity after a primary and booster is probably lifelong.
