General Advice

I would offer the following tips to ensure your travels are enjoyable and illness free.

  • Do a bit of homework. Find out about where you are going. If you are not 100% sure you will be visiting a particular place, but you might.. read about it first.
  • Find out if there are any particular dangers or problems you may come across. The travel links section has links to useful sites which will help you.
  • Remember, only 5% of travel associated disease is preventable by vaccination.
  • The main cause of death in travellers aged 20 - 29 is trauma - ie accidents, falls etc. Be careful!
  • Take a good first -aid kit wherever you go.
  • If you are going off the beaten track, take a kit which contains sterile intravenous and suture equipment with you.
  • Remember basic road safety. Find out a bit about driving where you are going.
  • If doing any unaccustomed sports, ie rafting, climbing, diving - make sure you are happy with the instructors, equipment etc.
  • Make sure you have enough travel insurance to cover you for what you will be doing.
  • Remember to take your malaria pills if they have been recommended.
  • Remember to keep taking them after you have returned!
