General Advice
I would offer the following tips to ensure your travels are enjoyable and illness free.
- Do a bit of homework. Find out about where you are going. If you are not 100% sure you will be visiting a particular place, but you might.. read about it first.
- Find out if there are any particular dangers or problems you may come across. The travel links section has links to useful sites which will help you.
- Remember, only 5% of travel associated disease is preventable by vaccination.
- The main cause of death in travellers aged 20 - 29 is trauma - ie accidents, falls etc. Be careful!
- Take a good first -aid kit wherever you go.
- If you are going off the beaten track, take a kit which contains sterile intravenous and suture equipment with you.
- Remember basic road safety. Find out a bit about driving where you are going.
- If doing any unaccustomed sports, ie rafting, climbing, diving - make sure you are happy with the instructors, equipment etc.
- Make sure you have enough travel insurance to cover you for what you will be doing.
- Remember to take your malaria pills if they have been recommended.
- Remember to keep taking them after you have returned!
