About the disease
Yellow fever is caused by a virus spread to man via the bite of an infected mosquito. Yellow fever vaccine is fortunately rare in travellers as the vaccine is very effective. It is found in tropical Africa and South America. In 1999 there were several tourist deaths following visits to Africa and South America
Symptoms
Fever, jaundice, bleeding and kidney failure. There is no specific anti-viral therapy and treatment is for symptoms only. Death rate is up to 60%.
Yellow Fever Certificates
An international certificate of vaccination will be required for entry into some countries - Sub-Saharan Africa, South America. Certificates may also be required when entering countries in Asia if travelling from endemic areas ( Included in the vaccine price)
Yellow Fever Vaccine
- Dose: 0.5ml deep subcutaneous (adults and children)
- Immunity lasts 10 years
Side effects: - Usually mild - some local swelling or discomfort. Occasional temperature 5 - 10 days after injection.
- Not recommended for pregnant women, children under 9 months, serious egg allergy or those with supressed immune systems.
